Completed sun room in Winchester Acres

A few weeks ago we shared three videos of a deck enclosure in Winchester Acres in east Louisville. The project is now complete so I wanted to show everyone how well the sun room turned out. This customer was actually a repeat client. We finished the deck for them a while back and they called us again to complete the sun room. Check out the gallery on my Flickr page and please contact me if you are looking to complete a similar project.

Why you should choose a registered builder

If you read my blog or newsletter, you know that I’m a pretty big advocate of choosing a registered builder or remodelor to complete your construction project. The Home Builders Association of Louisville (HBAL) recently put this video together explaining some of the reasons why it’s better to work with a registered builder. If you’re looking for a custom home builder in Louisville, please contact me with any questions you have. I’ve building and remodeling homes in Louisville and surrounding areas for more than 30 years. We hope you enjoy the video.

Why are estimates important?

Why is a detailed estimate so important in today’s building climate? When a builder gets a complete set of building plans, the builder is expected to give the client a cost estimate or quote as it is commonly referred to. When I started in the building business, the standard way of estimating a house was to take the lot cost and the cost of “lumber” which at that time encompassed windows, doors, roofing products and other related items, average these costs, use a multiplier, and cost the house. That method outgrew itself in the late 1970s. I was fortunate to … Read more

We haven’t even officially reached summer and already we’re seeing temperatures in the 90s. Louisville is known for its hot, humid, and dry summers, which in turn can lead to high-cost energy bills. As a custom home builder and remodelor for more than 30 years, I’ve experienced a lot of hot Louisville summers, but have also helped many … Read more

Commercial construction project in east Louisville

Today we wanted to share a couple of before videos with you. This was a commercial project we finished up a few weeks ago in east Louisville. The most difficult part of this project was the time frame. We had only three weeks to complete the project. The renovation took place inside of a warehouse area. I’ll be going back to get an after video and we’ll post that as well. P.L. Lyons does commercial new construction and commercial remodeling in and around Louisville, KY. Some things you should know about me

When you’re in the market for a contractor, builder, or remodeler, you want to make sure you choose someone reliable and trustworthy. We’ve all heard about the horror stories of homeowners forking out big money up-front for a project and the next thing they know their contractor skips town. While scenarios like that do happen, if you do your research, ask the right questions, and choose a qualified, registered builder, you should be just fine. That’s one reason why I wanted to write this post. I want to go ahead and answer some of those questions for you so you … Read more

In today’s market, the kitchen sells the home

The majority of buyers today are looking for convenience. They want to purchase a house that is move-in ready. They are busy professionals with young families and not a lot of extra time to devote to renovations. Do you know what the most costly and time consuming renovations is? The kitchen. When buyers are looking for a new construction, the kitchen is the top priority. Professional Builder recently conducted a survey of home builders and found that eight out of 10 believe the kitchen is the most vital space when it comes to marketing and selling new homes. Focused around … Read more

Perry on Homes

If you’re an HGTV fan like me, then you’ve probably seen the show Holmes on Homes. On the show, contractor Mike Holmes fixes houses that are a by-product of cheap labor, poor planning, and shoddy contract work. He totally revamps the home—sometimes gutting it if necessary—to meet code and cleans up the mess left behind by the previous contractor. His philosophy is simple and I tend to follow his way of thinking: Do it right the first time. So many builders cut corners these days. They take the fastest, easiest route possible to get the job done and forget about … Read more

Updating your bathroom before selling

We’ve all heard that kitchens and baths are what sell homes. It’s true. These rooms are usually the hardest and most expensive rooms to renovate, so a lot of the time, buyers are looking for homes with updated kitchens and bathrooms. As a custom home builder and remodeler, I wanted to talk exclusively about bathrooms today, because we get this question a lot: “How much it costs to update a bathroom.” The short answer is, “It depends.” The cost for a bathroom remodel can vary significantly depending on the bath and the house itself. You can spend as little as … Read more

Is price the only thing that matters?

We’ve definitely seen business pick up recently and are ecstatic about the seven bids we currently have out. Some of the builders we’re bidding against are licensed contractors—but some are not. As more and more people start thinking about home additions, remodels, or custom builds this spring, we wanted to remind everyone how important it is to not focus entirely on price. Quality is just as important when it comes to your home. I wanted to list a few reasons why you should consider choosing someone like us, instead of the cheapest bid you receive. After all, you want the … Read more
