Some Green Ideas That Save You Money Too!

How nice is it when you can save money and help the environment? When planning out your next remodel or new construction project there are a few products to think about. With a little thought you can be environmentally conscious and your pocket book will thank you for it. Here are a few things to be thinking about:

Lighting: Choose fixtures and bulbs that provide the same amount of light for a fraction of the energy cost. If a fixture uses a traditional incandescent light bulb, it will also be able to use a “screw-in” fluorescent bulb, which generally uses 60%-70% less energy. The fluorescent bulbs cost more but are 4-6 times more efficient. Be sure to try a fluorescent style bulb in the fixture before buying the fixture. Often the fluorescent bulbs are longer and any removable glass domes or accessories may not reattach over a longer bulb.

Insulation: Instead of choosing the traditional batted fiberglass insulation, you should consider a bio-based foam spray. There is a higher upfront cost, but the long term savings may help you make the decision. The bio-based spray foam can save you up to 50% off your heating and cooling compared to traditional fiberglass insulation.

Alternative-energy: The cost of many alternative energy sources is getting more competitive all the time. Solar, for example, is getting more affordable and efficient. Like the bio-foam, there is more upfront cost but the long-term savings potential may outweigh traditional products.

Heating and Cooling: Geo-thermal systems can save you as much as 70% off heating bills and 40% off cooling. If you spend an average of $2,000 in a single year you could shave that down to under $1,000. This gives you quick and measurable results. The cost of installing the system may seem steep but you can measure out the savings over 20 years and imagine putting those savings in a compounding investment.

These are just a few “green” options to consider when building or remodeling. If you’re thinking about starting a custom remodeling project at your home, contact me with any questions you have.
